Wreaths

December in Denmark usually begins by making Advent wreaths that are surrounded by four candles and formed circles. The wreaths are made of fine spruce pieces decorated with red berries and white candles. This wreath symbolizes the eternity of God. The four candles have the meaning of love, hope, joy, and peace. In some churches there are four purple candles (which symbolize fasting, loyalty, and regret) and in the center is placed a white candle that is larger than the other four candles. The candles will usually be lit up one by one each week in December.

There is also a church that has purple or blue candles with a pink candle. The pink color is defined as a symbol of joy. For the Danish house, it usually does not follow the rules of the church. They prefer what they want and usually string themselves together.

Candle Calendar

Another Christmas tradition in Denmark is the candle calendar. This is meant to create joy in winter in Denmark. Candles usually begin to burn on the night of December 1 and every day is turned on according to the date in the candle. This tradition can bring excitement, especially to children on cold days in Denmark. These children usually will be enthusiastic to light the candle and finally without the candle burned to the date of the 24th indicating if Christmas has arrived.

Besides candles, for making the calendar it can also be made with other objects, such as dolls of elves who plastered the dates. Also around the elves are small pockets containing candy, chocolate, or other small items for children’s entertainment. For making this candle calendar, it is usually the whole family helped and it can be used as a special time with family. The task of the children is to blow out the candle in the morning indicating ready for the next day.

Santa Lucia

Santa Lucia is celebrated every December 13 and is known as The Catholic Saint of Light. Santa Lucia is described as a woman wearing a white dress and on her head, there is a crown or wreath of candles. This celebration is marked by the presence of school children who come to visit nursing homes, churches, and hospitals and sing a Christmas song. They come with candles and wear white dresses. It is not only followed by girls but also followed by boys.

Christmas Market

For the main meals are usually smoked salmon, chicken cream with asparagus (for Christmas menu during the day) while for the evening roast duck accompanied by boiled potatoes and sweet potatoes, red cabbage, or beets on Christmas Eve.
